ARTIST BIO
Yvonne Catharina Vera Nilsson-Gehlin, born Nilsson on 24 January 1922 in Paris, died 29 March 2015 in Stockholm, was a Swedish modernist painter and draftsman.
As the daughter of Vera Nilsson, it was obvious to Catharina Nilsson-Gehlin that she would become an artist. At the age of 20, she began studying at Otte Sköld's painting school in Stockholm and then continued to Isaac Grünewald's painting school. At the age of 21, she entered the Art Academy in Stockholm, where Sven X-et Erixon was a professor. She graduated in 1948 and participated in her first exhibition the following year, the group exhibition Young Art at Galleri Färg och Form in Stockholm. As early as 1948, she received her first assignment, a fresco painting in what was then the National Handicrafts Institute in Stockholm.
During her time at the academy, Catharina Nilsson-Gehlin met coursemate Nils Gehlin, who would become her husband. Together they traveled to southern Europe for inspiration. During the 1950s they stayed in Provence and during the 1960s in Italy, especially in Pietrasanta in Tuscany, which is famous for its marble quarries and where, during the Renaissance, Michelangelo chose blocks of stone for his sculptures.
Nilsson-Gehlin's art usually approaches nature, in landscapes and environmental images where the motifs are rarely anchored in a specific time period. Like her mother, she became a skilled colorist early on with sensitivity to denominations and shades.
Catharina Nilsson-Gehlin's first solo exhibition was held in 1955 at Galleri Färg och Form in Stockholm. However, most of her solo exhibitions took place during the 1960s: 1965 at Konstnärshuset in Stockholm, the following year at Ljusdals Museum and 1967 at Gummesons art gallery in Stockholm. Later, her art was shown in Malmö, Borås and Eskilstuna. At Öland's Museum Himmelsberga, she had a solo exhibition as recently as 2011.
Catharina Nilsson-Gehlin's art can be found in the collections of the Modern Museum in Stockholm, Malmö Art Museum, Helsingborg City Collections and Eskilstuna Art Museum. Textile works by her can be found at the Swedish Embassy in Dublin and at the Royal University of Agriculture in Uppsala.Shipping for this item to U.K. mainland is £20.
